UK yob culture on it’s way to Dubai?
14/07/08
Go to any UK City Center on a Friday night and you will be confronted with undignified behaviour by any standards, drunk young and old wandering the streets in a daze and causing mayhem wherever they go. This is what the UK is known for in Europe and around the world now, the binge drinking, the street fighting and the whole "good night out". It's nothing to be proud of and even the nay sayers in the UK are now admitting they have real problem on their hands.
However it now seems this culture could be on it's way to Dubai , not to say the hedonistic lifestyle wasn't already here. However the recent arrest of Michelle Palmer for allegedly having sex on one of the beaches in Dubai as well as assaulting a police officer have brought the whole issue to the fore. Ms Palmer faces 6 years in prison for her "fumble in the dark" and the Schizophrenic nature of Dubai's current plight will once again be thrust into the limelight.
A plight so precarious that even the media outside of Dubai are now picking up on it , the UK paper the Sunday Telegraph run the story about Ms Palmer as you would expect her being an ex-pat from the UK. However the more interesting point of note in the article was how many ex-pats spend their Friday afternoons "brunching", whilst the local Muslim population go to the Mosque for Friday prayers and spend the rest of the day with their families the ex-pats head off to all-you-can-eat-and-drink brunch sessions at various Hotels.
A quote from the paper says it all: "Brunch can get very messy," admitted Hayley Monaghan, 23, from Liverpool, working in Dubai as a hostess for a local airline, one of many well-groomed young women heading into the Double Decker on Friday, where the advertised "brunch" lasts from midday right through to 3am. "You can get all you want to eat and drink for 150 dirhams, which is only about £20."
For those who would call these harmless eat-all-you-can buffets then think again as it was exactly one such even that lead to Ms Palmer being the worst for wear, before her sex on the beach party trick. So remorseful is Ms Palmer that she has quickly married the man she was caught in the act with to try and get some level of clemency from the judge. The lucky groom being Vince Acors, who has won the star prize of a sham wedding. This is not the first time Ms Palmer has been close to tying the knot as her ex-fiance in the UK said that he had dumped her because she wasn't adventurous enough, well she has certianlty made up for that now, it's really sad when women are expected to act in such a undignified manner.
I will not comment on the possible outcome of the court case this is not the time or the place.
What I will say is that there are 2 things Dubai needs to do and that is get a grip of reality. It has an old culture which doesn't stem from liberal values that the ex-pats bring but from more traditional Islamic ones. It is high time that Dubai stopped trying to be all things to all men. It is impossible and ludicrous for anyone to think that you can allow the things that corrupt a society like the UK to exist in Dubai and it NOT to have an adverse affect on the society.
