UAE Set To Launch Largest English Newspaper
15/04/08
Watch out there is a new kid on the block. It has been announced that UAE's new national newspaper will be called The National and will launch on 17th April.
Abu Dhabi Media Company, which is owned by the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, (so is it's impartiality already under question?) last year appointed former Daily Telegraph editor Martin Newland as it's editor. Newland has already outlined that the newspaper will target high-income, English-speaking expatriates, as well as people from South Asia, Europe and the Americas.
And the National means business. The National will have far more resources at its disposal than most other newspapers in the world. Newland has hired 175 journalists, including 40 home news reporters and 25 foreign correspondents. In fact the blanket coverage does not end there The National will be available in the UAE and on flights throughout the region.
Of course if you cannot get hold of a copy, you could always try it's website.

08/04/08
On the day that Nahkeel's 1200M world beating tower was once again in the news, the current flavour of the month Emmar's Burj Dubai (Tower of Dubai) became the tallest man made structure ever.
Although it is still a symbolic moment to reach the levles no man has ever done, shame your biggest rival announce a tower to become the 'Daddy' of them all.

Ten reasons why Dubai should host the Olympics
02/04/08
The news that Dubai may bid for the Olympic games comes as no real shock, nothing seems to stop this City so why let the small matter of the Olympics get in the way of putting yourself on the map.
So to make things easier for the International Olympic Committee when it comes to decision time, here is a list of 10 reasons why Dubai can host the games.
1. Dubai is ultra chic/cool/bling and will be even more so when they bid, it will give the dose of bling the games needs.
2. Dubai will have a purpose built Sports City, imagine that a whole sub-city dedicated to sport why not have the greatest sporting even on the earth there?
3. By the time the Dubai is ready for bidding it will be one of the few Cities in the world left capable of pulling off the Games, I shudder to see London's attempts in 2012.
4. There will be so much to do in Dubai keeping both sports fans and athletes entertained beyond the Games.
5. Dubai will have a super duper brand spanking new Metro system in place , a public transport system Beijing can only dream of.
6. Dubai is a City full of distractions for the poor little IOC delegates who's job it is to travel the world looking a nice plans for the Games. They could stay in the Seven Star Hotel and sample the pleasures of life, all before the actually voting begins of course.
7. Dubai has it's fair share of cheaper distractions for the IOC delegates like cheap Russian whores, now if that won't sway the voting what will?
8. How about a ride up the Burj Dubai elevators? They will go 30 km/hour once built more fun for the IOC boys.
9. English is almost the national language I wonder how China will cope with communication at Beijing and let's not mention London.
10. Dubai is Dubai, and in a world where size is everything Dubai has the biggest XY and Z ever.

Dubai to host ‘Green Formula Zero’ race
21/03/08
Dubai is a city of cars as the last few blog items have shown, in between the massive horror crash and the stolen Police car's was an item about the Green credentials of Dubai. Some of this is coming as a surprise to me as I really never saw Dubai as an 'Eco City' a year back but since then a number of things have changed.
It is clear that the powers that be want to give Dubai a Green tinge, I could be cynical and say that any city worth it's salt must do that in this day and age but I will reserve judgement for another day. To the topic at hand; Dubai is to host last of four races in the Formula Zero season, something which has been going on for the last five years now. The full details of the race have yet to be annoucned but it is a great development as it might introduce the idea of Green motoring to a City that has no real concept of it.
I am all for creating awareness but I think there has to be a real push amongst the populas to understand Eco issues and make then go Green, Dubaian's have to get OUT of their cars more and for this to happen there has to be a better transport system. Even then I think there will be many who are too proud to ditch their car's for the new Metro system and this is where the main problem lies.
So without wanting to bang on about the same thing, come on people get out and see this race , sometime in November the Gulf News says, i'd say you should walk or cycle to the race but that would be so wrong on Dubai's roads so I won't.

Cheeky Robbers Steal Cop Cars!
12/03/08

It would appear that the Dubai Police Force are missing two cars, after "two brand new BMW cars which were stolen ... from the parking lot outside the Arabian Gulf Mechanical Centre (AGMC) showroom on Shaikh Zayed Road."
I'm not sure what surprises me more, the fact these cheeky thieves would nab police cars or the police driving such fanatstic models.
"An official from the company confirmed the theft and said that the value of the two stolen cars was around Dh500,000."

Duabi Municipality goes on mission to be Green
07/03/08
Dubai Municipality is undergoing a number of projects to make Dubai a little greener, literally and also in the eco / environmental sense. Being a desert oasis does not stop Dubai from suffering some of the same problems that dog many mega cities across the world. With an every growing population, massive development projects and a high turnaround of tourists the level of waste Dubai is producing reached 3.5 million tonnes in 2007. With each household in Dubai producing approximately 1 tonne of waste every year.
The solution for a city surrounded by desert seems simple, dig a big hole and put it all in the middle of a sand dune surely? Well maybe 20 years ago, but now with the world turning "Green" more innovative solutions must be found. Dubai Municipality has done just that, by announcing a development for the regions first thermal recycling project.
As part of the AED20bn ($5.4bn) scheme, waste produced in the emirate will be incinerated. The process will also release heat that can be harnessed as a further source of energy. The technology will reduce the need for landfill sites in the emirate. The municipality estimates that once the incinerator is operational, only 10 per cent of waste will need to buried.
Although there are many many initiatives in operation in Dubai looking at going Greener most of them seem to be based around developing more eco-friendly buildings but this scheme seems to deal with the everyday problems of a city that is growing at exponential rate.
This is not the only thing Dubai Municipality is doing they have also announced that all cars over 10 years old should not be allowed into the city as they are a major source of air pollution.
More than 75 per cent of air pollutants are from vehicle emissions, according to a report released Wednesday by Reda Hassan Salman, Head of the Environment Protection Department at Dubai Municipality.
The report also suggests that the use of better fuel, technology, enhanced inspections and maintenance of vehicles, and the use of an emission measuring Remote Sensing Device should also be adopted to check on vehicle emissions in order to improve air quality.
All this goes along with Dubai Municipality's Strategic Plan (2007-2011) which seeks to increase the per capita share of greenery to 23.4 square meter and raise the total area of cultivated land to 3.15 per cent of the total urban land by 2011. It took the first step towards the goal this week, by planting the first date palm tree in the Mirdif Park site as part of the 38th Plantation Week.
All that Dubai Municipality must make sure of now is that all these plans don't fall down like previous efforts it has previously tried to reduce per capita waste levels to 555 kilograms a year through its Target 555 initiative, but it was unsuccessful. Also a previous attempt by Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to ban cars over 10 years old from the roads of Dubai failed due to economic reasons.

Dubai reinvents the Wheel
06/03/08
Dubai has seen it all when it comes to buildings, from the tall to the underwater (which never happened) to whole buildings that will rotate. However imagine a building that looks like a big wheel but turns at two different speeds, this is the Wheel of Dubai.

The people behind this stunning looking structure are the Dutch firm Royal Haskoning , and they are not just in the business of developing a fantastic looking building they also have a use for it too. To quote from their website (there is no way I could describe it better):
"Our design is radically different, it revolves around a huge void, providing a dramatic and totally original profile. It consists of 2 different parallel rotating structures. On one side is the fast rotating structure, which has a full rotation cycle of 30 minutes. It contains of 36 classic viewing capsules, which are projecting from the side of the Wheel, allowing for maximum panorama.
On the other side of the wheel is the slow rotating (so vibration free) structure, which has a full rotation cycle of 6 hours and 24 large capsules providing space for hotel rooms, swimming pool, restaurant and really any other imaginable function. Why not a catwalk, a showroom, a discotheque?"
Why not indeed, big wheels have come along way since the fairground rides I used to go om back in the 80's they are springing up all over the place as ways to see a City. The London Eye is one, however this idea is great as it add's something extra to the concept, truly unique.

H&G Opt For Disneyland Instead Of Dubailand!
05/03/08
This story will just not go away. Liverpool's owner have been reported to have dismissed DIC's offer to buy their stakes in Liverpool Football Club - and don't expect a resolution on this any time soon. For the Americans have continued to court DIC's interest as they seek the mega buck pay off they wanted in the first place.
DIC chief executive Sameer al-Ansari, a Liverpool fan, said yesterday. “It’s not easy because the owners are in dreamland about valuations at the moment." It would seem that their refusal to accept DIC's latest offer means they continue to be in dreamland over their valuation of their asset.
Nonetheless, DIC refuse to be deterred by this latest setback: “No figures have been (publicly) mentioned, and talks are ongoing,” a spokesperson said. “No timeline has been set on the talks.”
