SATELLITE PHOTO: Megalomaniac writes his name on island seen from space

Sunday, 14 January 2007 One Comment

Dubai is a little crazy we all know that especially when it comes to it’s construction ideas. I thought I’d not see a more audacious project than the Palm Jumeriah which is famed from being able to be seen from space. However just a few kilometers down the main Dubai road is Abu Dhabi the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and just down from their is what has to be the most bizarre construction project I’ve seen. The picture below taken from Google Maps shows the letters “HA” being etched into an island just off Abu Dhabi.

The letters “HA” close up is that the H full of sea water?

Zoomed out you can see the space left to write the whole message

The fact that this is seen on Google Maps from a fairly zoomed out scale shows the size of the etching into the island. It also looks like the “H” is full of sea water where as the “A” is filling up. Having done some research on where and what this island is the following facts appear which may or may not give an insight into exactly what is being spelt out on the island.

1. The island is called Al Futaisi (or Futaysi) and is quoting from their website “The number one United Arab Emirates (UAE) ecotourism destination, under the patronage of Sheikh Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, is a unique harmony of fun, health, education and environmental awareness” for more info on this visit http://www.futaisi.com/gallery.htm

2. Each letter is approx 500 M in size and is meant to connect to the sea [Via http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/523553/an/0/page/10]

Although no one can be sure about what is going on it seems the Sheikh who owns the island is writing his name on the island as some form of advertising / self promotion. It’s all a little too Lex Luther from Superman for my liking. I presume he wants to write “Hamad Bin Hamdan” across his island to possibly get some publicity for this ecotourism business. Just a personal thought and one that just occured to me when I was writing this maybe the sea water will be used to build some type of eco habitat for wildlife and also act as way of attarcting attention to the island.

It’s just going too far writing your name on the world so you can be remembered the chinese built great structures to be show their might, even the Palm islands are pushing the boundaries of construction technology to the limit but this seems like the signs of a man with too much money. At least no one can ask him to prove the island belongs to him if he has his name splattered all across it.

What I’ve never understood is why these megalomaniacs with their ultra-scale self-promotions make us spɐǝɥ ɹno uo puɐʇs to read them? Do they not know that virtually every map in the world is printed with North UP?

The number of people who see Hamad Bin Hamdan’s name from the air is miniscule. The number who will see it on Google Maps (or other satellite services), but pǝʇɹǝʌuı is quite a few more.
