The Emirates have decided to axe its printed in-flight magazines, newspapers and entertainment guides to save up to one tonne of weight on each Airbus A380 “super jumbo” flight.

In the first signs of the global credit crunch/global recession hitting the region, the move from Emirates designed to help reduce fuel emissions and is part of its cost-cutting measures.

To compensate for the lack of magazines, Emirates plans to feed similar content into its in-flight entertainment system, including news, features and information. The airline expects to make a reduction of two kilograms of paper weight per seat to substantially reduce each super jumbo’s load.

Tim Clark, Emirates’ president, said banning paper would lighten the aircraft by a tonne. “It’s 2kg per seat, and 500 seats – a worthwhile saving,” he said. “We are doing it because of fuel prices and because of the environment.”
