Dubai Students Are Enviromental Poster “Boys”
Two Dubai students have made their mark with their environmental posters at an international competition. The International Advertising Association-Dentsu Global Student Poster Competition brought together 145 students from 13 countries, in a bid to support the UN action for climate change. The two students both from the American University in Dubai, won third price and first prize in different categories, Shahad Nasib who’s poster titled ‘Brain’ won third prize in the competition, the tag line for her poster was simply “You’re invited to think ”
She said of her poster
“I believe if you want to change something, you have to change it inside out. For us to change the situation of the environment we have to think about every choice we make, everyday. Thus my poster invites people to think before they do anything that may affect the environment,”
Salwa Nahouli also of American University in Dubai, won the Regional Middle East/Africa category with her design called Penguin2. The poster depicts the slow extinction of penguins through a creative play of word formations that questions the onlooker – Are we next?
She said of her work
“Images create a huge impact on people. As a visual artist I believe one would look at this poster and change their mind about how they treat the environment, rather than when asked to read documents on the same,”
So there were no poster boys but girls from Dubai who have done us proud and shown that Dubai does care about the environment despite craving up the desert at the same time. There are two images of the posters below, larger sizes can be found on the University website.
