Dubai Gets Shirty Over T-Shirt content

Sunday, 19 July 2009 One Comment

“Done it been there got the T-shirt ” or something similar is a common phrase banded about to say , Yeah I have done something.  Well for a couple of people in Dubai over the last month or so this has become literally the case , when their T-shirts have got them into bother with the Dubai authorities.

The first incident occurred sometime in June 2009 and involved a Lebanese man by the name of Raffi Nernekian who was arrested and subsequently jailed for month His crime?wearing T-shirt which depicts a nude Victoria Beckham hiding her breasts and her genitals with her hands and the slogan of the T-shirt “Protect the skin you’re in “. The T-shirt in question was one for cancer awareness, and this has been used to kind of suggest that the matter was all a little over the top. I think that we should spend a little time thinking about how said it is that we need to use a naked woman to make us aware of cancer, I mean is that what the world has come to?

The second more recent incident involved the high end chain of stores Harvey Nichols which was selling T-shirts depicting a dog trampling on the UAE flag, one has to wonder again as to which idiot somewhere in marketing approved this product. The store was closed whilst the T-shirts were taken off the shop floor and Harvey Nichols issued an apology amidst calls to boycott the store via Facebook and Twitter.

As we all know Dubai has it rules about what you can or can’t do , these to some part are based on the local culture. This for those who live in Dubai is how it is , and I think that’s how it should be . If you live in Dubai you live by the rules.
